Driver Responsibility Assessment : DRA

The New York State Department of Motor Vehicles charges a penalty called the Driver Responsibility Assessment to drivers who have 6 or more points on his or her driving record.    The cost is $300 for 6 dmv points and $75 for each additional point.   DMV sends a bill as to the total and minimum amount that can be paid and the due date. The driver’s privileges will be suspended until the assessment is paid.

DMV calculates points in a time frame of 18 months.    Points for tickets issued within any 18 months period are added together.    If the point total reaches or exceeds 6, the driver must pay the assessment in addition to the court fine and insurance increases.   Completing the Point & Insurance Reduction Program (aka Defensive Driving Course) will not reduce your points for purposes of this penalty.
